We left Cottonwood RV Park and headed for Whitehorse. Along the way we stopped in Haines Junction
to revisit a now favorite bakery. While there
we decided to visit a couple of locally famous churches. The first was an Anglican log church and the
second was a Catholic church made from a Quonset hut left over from the
soldiers who built the Alcan Highway. We
were so taken with it, that we are including it here. Inside, it must have seated at most 15
worshipers.
This return trip to Whitehorse was a pilgrimage of sorts to
seek out the principle sources for Robert Service’s “The Cremation of Sam
McGee”. The starting point was to head
to Lake Laberge, which sits about 46 km north of Whitehorse. Here are the Showers and Stutsmans
reverently pointing to the sign.
Karen was shocked to find this sign at Lake Laberge as this
would have made the cremation illegal.
We all gathered by the side of the lake for a reading of
“The Cremation of Sam McGee”. It was a
very quiet and somber moment for us all.
We dedicated the moment to Peter Lutken, Mike Spain, and others who have
read this great work to incoming freshman at St. Mark’s and campers at ESD.
On the way back from the lake, Karen snapped this fox eating
berries.
In downtown Whitehorse, there is a monument to Robert
Service. Karen felt compelled to pause
and sit at this representation of his writing desk.
