Day 31, August 5 Fairbanks

August 5 was a rainy day.  We knew it was coming so we planned accordingly.   We did laundry again in preparation for our journey to Denali tomorrow.  After our washing was finished we headed off to get haircuts at the Walmart.  The problem was they were all booked.  Our next stop was the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Museum of the North.   It was very informative and well laid out with a mixture of the history of Alaska, the people, and their art.   We saw an excellent movie about winter in Fairbanks which sealed any doubts in Karen's mind about living here.  The fact that many residents have to use outhouses because at 50 below zero, both water and sewer lines freeze, did not make her want to even visit Fairbanks in the winter.   After the museum, we went to the Student Union Building so that Debbie could get some t-shirts for gifts.  While there, Don decided to get his annual shearing.

A quick lunch and then off to buy groceries for the next 5 days in Denali.   Along the way we stopped a bowl making plant.  They turn bowls of all sizes and shapes out of Birch wood.  Karen loved their figure outside the plant.

They had a widow so that you could watch them in action.  A very labor intensive process.   Don and Barb helped the local economy by buying one.

If you have been following the blog, you know that we find bakeries whenever we can.  In Fairbanks, we branched out to include ice cream in our searches.   We hit the big time with Hot Licks.   The Alaskan blueberry was to die for...or die from depending how much you ate.

Karen is explaining the finer points in how to make ice cream disappear.
