Day 30, August 4 Fairbanks

Not every day is as exciting at the last.  This morning was a time to do chores:  laundry, shopping, and cleaning up.   For all out enjoyment, nothing matches spray washing off the thousands of miles of bugs from the front of the car.   No pictures for this, just use your imagination.

In the mid-morning we drove out to see the sled dog museum, but the dogs didn't show.  We had to settle for a hotdog vendors pup across the street.  We all loved him, but it was his first day away from mama and he wanted to go home!

Next, we drove out to a large animal compound belonging to the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  As luck would have it, it is closed on Mondays.   We did get a chance to see some of their muskoxen grazing placidly in the field.  We hope that they are as docile as they appear.  After a lunch by the side of lake contained within the University's grounds, we visited the botanical gardens.

Here are a couple of shots in the gardens.

Look at the size of the cabbages.   The growing season is weird in Alaska, but it does produce spectacular results in some cases.

Lastly, we decided to give the fair scene another chance.   This time we were not disappointed.  Very large, and well attended.

An exhibit of buddy burners made from # 10 cans.   Not your everyday display.

Karen was taken by the prize winning reindeer.   Not a lot of competition in his class, but Karen's favorite for sure.

If you look closely in the field, you can see hundreds of sandhill cranes.  A person at the fair told us about this conservation farm and the sandhill crane festival coming up next week, so we decided we couldn't miss it.   We mentioned that these birds were hunted in Texas much to the horror of the conservationists in Alaska!
