Today we signed up for a tour in Denali called "Kantishna Experience". It was a 12 hour ride on a school bus to the end of the road that runs through the National Park. It is a tour that brings you not only to the end of road, but gives you a chance to get close (24 miles) to Mt. McKinley, see lots of animals, meet lots of interesting people, learn about the history of the park and the people who lived in Kantishna, and in John's case a chance to relive those thousands of miles riding a school bus in rural Port Byron.
As I mentioned Mt. McKinley is the star of the show.
We saw 18 1/2 bears (don't ask, you may not want to know), tons of caribou, moose, Dahl sheep, a fox, and many chipmunks. Bears are not always as easy to spot as you might think. We saw these "rocks" in the meadow which morphed into a mama and two cubs.
We finally got to the end of the road.
Before we got off the bus for the photo op above, they handed out these stylish hats.
At one of the stops, you could take some fun pictures. This one is of Fannie Quigley, a pioneering woman who lived at the end of the Denali road for 35 years before the park was formed. Her cabin was one of the guided tour stops. Karen wanted to sign up to take her place living with little heat and having to hunt/gather all her food, but I convinced her to settle for this souvenir photo.
The had some moose antlers inside which you could lift. They weigh a ton.
