Today was fair day at Haines.
We had looked forward to seeing how a local fair in Alaska
would compare to a county fair in Illinois.
In a word, it was smaller. Most
people both working and visiting the fair were people we had met in town…check
out girl in grocery, volunteer at the local museum, waitress, etc. It was clearly a big deal for Haines and the
surrounding area. The craft and food
booth contained great photos, quilts, and colorfully arranged jars of jams and
veggies. As always, we were most
interested in the food. We passed on
the Sushi booth and went straight for the homemade ice cream sandwiches:
On the way back to our campground we snapped a picture of
the welcome to Haines sign which greets the drivers but not those persons
arriving on the ferry.
Since some of you have asked about the long days, John
snapped this picture at 10:45 p.m.
