Today was our first full day in Denali National Park. We had chosen Savage River Campground because of excellent recommendations of Joe Milliet and Mark Sullivan. It is the only campground from which you can see Mt. McKinley. This is one of the signs at the entrance to the park. We had to take it on the second day because of the large number of tourists in front of it yesterday. These tourists can be such a bother to natives like us.
This was the view this morning from our campsite. We could and will put more pictures in later as this is the real star of the park. Only about 30 percent of the people who come to Denali even get to see Mt. McKinley as it is usually shrouded in clouds. More about this later.
Denali has working sets of sled dogs within the park that do all of the heavy hauling in the winter. These dogs are not like the racing dogs as they are bred for long legs, strength, and endurance. It takes 90 volunteers to exercise these dogs in the summer and they could be seen with their dogs throughout the park in the afternoons. I did manage to capture one fearless musher in action...notice the grim determination on her face.
Even a hardened musher has to give her dogs a little loving.
We did one long walk down to Horseshoe Lake that has been formed by beaver dams. Here is John searching for one of the busy beavers or should we say eager beavers.
We drove down to one of the river crossings on the main road and saw this magnificent caribou.
